Oware is the most widely played mancala game in the world: two players, a board of twelve pits and 48 seeds. On your turn you lift all seeds from one of your six pits and sow them counter-clockwise, one per pit. If your last seed lands in an opponent pit and makes it hold exactly two or three seeds, you capture them — and any consecutive opponent pits holding two or three are captured as well. The first player to capture 25 or more seeds wins.

Oware in a nutshell

Oware is a two-player mancala game on a board of two rows of six pits with 48 seeds (four per pit). Each player owns one row plus a scoring store. Sowing is counter-clockwise and skips the pit you started from on full laps; stores are never sown into. A capture happens only when your LAST seed makes an opponent pit hold exactly 2 or 3 seeds, chaining backwards through consecutive opponent pits of 2 or 3. First to 25 seeds wins; 24–24 is a draw.

The three signature rules

Grand slam: if one move would capture every opponent seed, the whole capture is cancelled and seeds stay put (World Oware Federation tournaments).

Feeding: if your opponent has no seeds you must play a move that gives them some; if no move can, the game ends and each side keeps the seeds on its own side.

Endings: 25+ captured seeds wins immediately; a player with nothing to sow ends the game on the tally of stores plus remaining seeds.

Frequently asked questions

What is Oware?

Oware is the classic West African mancala (count-and-capture) board game: two players, twelve pits, 48 seeds. You sow seeds counter-clockwise and capture when your last seed makes opponent pits hold exactly 2 or 3 seeds. First to capture 25 seeds wins.

How many seeds does Oware start with?

Four seeds in each of the twelve pits — 48 in total. Each player also has a store, and captured seeds are kept there.

Do you sow into your own store in Oware?

No. Unlike Kalah, stores sit outside the sowing loop in Oware: seeds are only ever dropped into the twelve pits, never into a store.

What happens if you capture all of the opponent's seeds (a grand slam)?

On this site the grand slam capture is cancelled and nothing is taken — the seeds stay as sown. This is the World Oware Federation tournament rule and the most common online ruling.

What if my opponent has no seeds left?

You must feed them: any move that leaves the opponent at least one seed is mandatory while one exists. If no move can feed them, the game ends and each side keeps the seeds on its own side.

How do you win at Oware?

Capture 25 or more of the 48 seeds. If the game ends by starvation or the move limit, each side adds its remaining seeds to its store; more than 24 wins, 24–24 is a draw.
